Gameplay

There are also puzzles in the form of dialogue options that affect the game, and therefore a certain history that could evolve in another way. It is up to the player to explore and soak in the nightmarish atmosphere as exploration and the overall environment is encouraged within the game.
Storyline
The game starts with the wakes of the protagonist in the hospital bed after a nasty car crash and this sets off the rest of the game, in which he has lost all his memory and is looking for clues to help himself in regaining his amnesia. He seems to be in a broken-down sanitarium with wicked patients and staff. He explores the asylum and its surrounding locations in desperation only to come across puzzle pieces throughout the story which outline what he bestowed upon himself before losing his memory. They barely disturb each other over one maddening adventure until they move the protagonist from that ward to a town stricken by disease, a strange and savage carnival, and indeed to the dark days of his traumatized childhood itself.
Graphics & Sounds
Sanitarium had decent graphics back in the day, it utilized a mixture of pre-rendered backdrops and fully realized character sprites in a way that was visually rich and disturbing. All of the environments are well crafted, featuring rotting buildings, desolate planets, and dream-like settings. The character designs also feature the hyper-realistic patients of the sanitarium to the more bizarre creatures that show up later in the episodes and are all equally disturbing. The sound design of the game is just as good, filling the players’ ears with a nice captivating soundtrack and proper sound effects that instill fear.
The music is reactive, such that, when the battle becomes heated, the score accompanies the mood of the action or the voice more somberly than the fighting. The voice acting is equally impressive where the characters gently perform their dialogue without force which helps the immersion in the game.

Final Thoughts
Sanitarium, first of all, is interesting and creepy at the same time and for me, it sticks in my mind as something very potent in the world of psychological scares. I was certainly drawn to the gameplay, great engaging story, graphics, perfect art, and sound. Sanitarium might be in a different walking cane fashion, but it’s still an eerie and engaging experience, one I’d recommend any fans of psychological horror and point-and-click games try out.
